Soweto Wine Festival grows wine spend
Since our last newsletter,
we organised the 7th TOPS Soweto Wine Festival, attracting
a new record in attendance of 8,500 visitors over three
nights.
The most exciting part of this 7-year festival is that
we can now see from the research
that we are making an impact on buying / spending power
of this market and to spreading the appreciation of
wine. In Johannesburg, we have seen a shift on our courses
with people of colour now making up 20% of enrolments.

Dutch students fly to SA for 6-month compact wine course
Last month, Michelle
Grimbeek and I had the wonderful experience of lecturing
in Port Alfred at the Stenden University, who offer
a degree in hospitality, as well as an elective for
their Dutch students to attend a 6-month wine course.
To date, 28 students have completed the Cape Wine Academy
South African Wine Course, Certificate and Diploma combined
over a six-month period. I was amazed at their knowledge
and experience of international wines and it is a tremendous
compliment to South Africa that they want to come and
experience South African hospitality and our wine industry. |
Fabulous lecturers such as Cathy van
Zyl MW, Catherine Dillon CWM, winemaker Bruwer Raats all travel
to Port Alfred to lecture.
Student
Focus: Diploma graduates make wine in Rivonia
Last week, Cape Wine Master and
lecturer Chris de Klerk and I attended a wonderful wine
launch. Johannesburg Diploma graduates, Sara Webster
and Glen James, own a farm in the Bonnievale area and
truck their grapes up to Gauteng to make the wine here
in a Rivonia Cellar.
We tasted their first 2007 Shiraz, followed by the 2008
with a splash of Viognier and their 2009 that has both
Mourvedre and Viognier. All are extremely quaffable,
with the latter having a great aging potential. While
production is small, the packaging is funky, with lots
of gold writing, and it is appropriately called JHB.

An amazing
glass of wine
It's very easy, in the abundance of wines
surrounding us, to forget just how amazing
a glass of wine is. Grape pips dated beyond
8 000BC have been found in Georgia so it
is likely that the vine has been in existence
for more than 10 000 years. The vine adapted
successfully wherever it was; the vine has
evolved and adapted to its location.
